First of all, they already are in the "retail sales business." Yes, Amazon is planning to have physical retail stores. They could be used for picking up or dropping off packages and ordering. There really is no reason for Amazon to not have retail locations. Think about it, they have a huge amount of data as to what people are buying and where. They could easily open a radio-shack type store and put their top-20 sellers from that city in it and be very profitable. They also already have a crazy good infrastructure in place, so supplying the stores would be efficient and they could probably undersell their competition just because of that.
An as an old school nerd and amateur radio operator, I too am saddened on what has become of Radio Shaft, er, Shack. That said, there business model was no longer really viable. The home electronics hobbyist is increasingly a thing of the past, factory built electronics are bought at big box stores these days, and their venture in to the world of mobile was hardly successful. Maybe they can emerge from bankruptcy with a fresh new approach to the market. Or not.
Meh, is it really that shocking? Their business model just doesn't work anymore. That's just what happens when you don't adapt, unfortunately.
Okay, when is the last time you even heard anyone say that they needed something from Radio Shack? My husband and I were discussing that last night and our cumulative answer was his dad, back in 1997! With online retailers their business model just failed to change with the times. It's a shame for their employees though.

Yeah I agree. Today's world is extremely fast moving, so any company, regardless of their position, could become obsolete VERY quickly. Kodak and Blockbuster were great examples of this, and now I guess we can add radioshack to the list as well.
Maybe the good that might come out of this is for others to learn from Radio Shack's mistakes and avoid them? Makes me wonder why some companies cling to business models that don't work. Business models who negative cumulative effects eventually end up killing those companies. Who gets to be blamed? The board of directors for being too blind to see what's coming?
That's right, the board of directors don't get any sort of blame, but all the others with losses don't get a refund, so I think that directors should be penalized somehow.
