Walmart is another reason so many of the specialty retailers and also the mom & pop retailers have gone out of business.

The demand for low cost goods, and in a lot of ways places like Walmart have also created the manufacturing vacuum we live in within the United States. I'm "lucky" to be in a manufacturing sector (or better a niche) that is seeing gains in domestic manufacturing...but there aren't many.

Stores as showplaces for items is a possibility, but it sounds vaguely reminiscent of eBay stores...and those have fizzled out.

Some of those low cost goods are not worth buying sometimes. I often check my goods to make sure we are in good condition before buying. I could remember my mom complaining about our Neighborhood Walmart store having low quality peaches.
