I think we should probably look at getting rid of the whole "war on drugs" model. It's clearly not working. As we see with the legalization of marijuana, the sky is not falling in Colorado. Life is going on as it normally does. Some people will smoke, the majority will not. The use of the drug hasn't sky rocketed as far as I know. I'd like to see more statistics on this, though.
I saw on the news where Colordo is now having issues with drivers, driving while high. They are being pulled over and arrested for operating a automobile while high.
In this case everybody wins people won't anymore get fined for illegal marijuana and the state gets more tax income whilst there isn't so huge street markets.

One of the reasons pot was kept illegal so long was because the private prison companies were such strong lobbysts and employ a lot of ex congressman. I have always been pro-legalization for this reason alone. Pot is no worse than alcohol, but yet a million people are arrested for it, and once they get out, it decreases their chance to get real jobs, which leads them to crime as a way to support themselves. The economic trickle down from pot arrests, both from prison costs and unemployement is huge.
