Trump thinks Bill Gates can help the world or the US fight terrorism by "closing up the internet in some way."

While yes something has to be done about making it harder for jihadis to be recruited online "closing down the internet in some way" is no solution. There have to be better ways to fight terrorists on the net.

His statement is good in theory but bad in practice. It's like he doesn't think about what he's gonna say next and just spout anti-anything propaganda. I agree that terrorist factions should be tracked down on the internet but shutting it down is not feasible, practical or even possible. I propose security hackers and such because I too have seen ISIS recruit over Tumblr, it's quite ridiculous but somehow it works.

While I kind of like the guy, his statements as of late have been a little bit far out, in my opinion. And this latest one is continuing on that trend it looks like.

It seems like the best solution but the internet is here to stay and there are far too many people in the world who rely on it now so "closing the internet down in some way" is just not going to happen I don't think.

But then again maybe we are reading too much into it, by his statement maybe he means cutting our internet access to jihadis or closing their sites down or something similar.

Shutting down the internet is not practical or possible for so many reasons, plus it won't stop ISIS either. They may use the internet but many meetings are done through face to face third parties, and you can stop that by knowing who is involved.

Isn't it better to 'spy' on them to find out who they are and then physically catch them?

I don't think Trump has any idea of how the internet (or many things for that matter) works.
How in the world could you "close up some of the internet."
That makes so little sense my head hurts.

These are reactionary statements that appeal to those who want to hear that someone is doing something. Of course it would be impossible as many companies would have to shut down, people lose their jobs, and no one would get their online orders. Hackers know the best way to track someone it to monitor them, look for patterns and then track them down. Sometimes the electronic trail is the only way to find the main terrorists, so shut that down and they can go underground.

Ideas have to have a practical logic to it, and sadly this doesn't. Maybe blocking certain countries would work as China does, but people would still find a way.

How would that help out at all? Is he going to shut down mainstream media as well? They don't need any of those sources to carry out an attack on a random place.

Not at all sure of exactly what he said in what context (the media loves to misquote Republicans), but you cannot shut down the entire internet just because a very small percentage of people use a very small amount of online bandwidth to spread propaganda, plan terrorist acts, and make terrorist threats.

I think it's better to convince owners of individual websites that are popular with terrorists to cooperate as much as they legally can with helping authorities track down those who are going beyond "freedom of speech" and getting into making terrorist threats, plotting and planning acts of terror, and referencing other illegal activities online related to such violence and threats to national security.

his words are basically quoted. But really, how is this different than what China and Russia do as well as many Muslim countries. Congrats Trump, way to go all commie on us.

Don't China and Russia just heavily censor their internet?

Don't know if it's the same where you are from but over here we are not far off that system. The government has put a block on a large number of sites that could be used for or promote piracy. It looks good on paper, preventing piracy, but looking at it from the bigger picture it's not much different from what the mentioned countries do.
