Wiccans are witches. They don't deny it so theirs is more than just a religion. It's a coven. Wicca, according to studies is the fastest growing religion in America. Why is Wicca getting more converts than any other religion? Take a look at some of their principles and beliefs: http://www.controverscial.com/The 13 Principles of Wiccan Belief.htm As American Witches, we are not threatened by debates on the history of the craft, the origins of various terms, the legitimacy of various aspects of different traditions. We are concerned with our present and our future. We recognize that our intelligence gives us a unique responsibility toward our environment. We seek to live in harmony with nature in ecological balance offering fulfillment to life and consciousness within an evolutionary concept. Calling oneself ‘Witch’ does not make a Witch – but neither does heredity itself, nor the collecting of titles, degrees and initiations. A Witch seek to control the forces within her/himself that make life possible in order to live wisely and without harm to others and in harmony with nature. Would you join Wicca so you could learn hexing?
Wicca is a religion, but not all those who join are witches, but they think they are. I find some of the principles at odds, because if they do value nature, then magic, spells and rituals actually go against the natural fabric of the world. I find most people who proclaim they are Wiccan, like the idea of magic, spells and the law of attraction. Whether any real magic is used is debatable, because it is done so openly. I see these days it's more commercial with the sale of spells, crystals, herbs and guidebooks. That isn't really magic.
I know plenty of Christians/Catholics ect who believe in all sorts of equally "magically" things! Yet we treat them as serious and we deride Wicca's/Wiccans whatever you want to call them. It seems major religions hold a monopoly on silly things being taken seriously!
I really don't think about it too much. To each their own. Not everybody has the same beliefs and who are we to judge. People have the freedom to choose to follow whatever they want to.
Well it all sounds pretty "new agey" to me, but I imagine wicca has been practiced for centuries. There is a certain appeal to believing in being one with the earth and the creatures contained there in. I think most people who are wiccan are pretty gentle souls. People can believe what they like as long as they hurt no one else in my book.
it actually sounds really interesting, I'll do some research about it when the semester is over, lol. I also think that people have their right to believe in what they want, and it also can be like an "alternative" to religion, it doesn't seems strange for me that people are getting bored of it and are trying to look for different things.
You'll find many people who will say they are a witch and quickly say they are not wiccan, because it can be seen as fake witchery. I used to live in Salem, Massachusetts where a huge population of people are witches and most would not say they are wiccan, publicly at least. With all religions, it has a set of rules and beliefs and if you don't follow them, then are you really a part of that religion? Sometimes people feel they want to belong to something and that's fine, and others feel the need to classify themselves as something.
I've heard a lot of people talk about Wicca but did not know it was related to people claiming they are witches. Is it a true religion or is it a sort of movement?
What is a true religion? It's a group of people who have a set of beliefs or doctrines that others wish to follow and use as a guide in their lives. Most people who are wiccan wish to learn how to be a witch. Most revolve around ceremonies and rituals, to Gods and Goddesses. Many do not have magical abilities but would like to think they will by being a wiccan.
Ahh I understand it now. Thanks for the explanation What I meant by "true religion" is is it recognised as a religion.
